If you have worked as a spatial designer for at least seven years, such as an interior designer, architectural designer, landscape designer, or urban designer, you can register and obtain the title. This can be done through the exam, which is coordinated and administered by the Architects' Register. The exam assesses design skills and the knowledge relevant to the title. The exact criteria are set out in the Examenregeling Wet op de architectentitel.
The Architects' Register coordinates the alternative routes to the title; this is one of the executive tasks we perform as representatives of the Architects' Title Act. The exam is one of the routes to the title.

The exam consists of two parts spread over one calendar year. The first part, the portfolio interview, assesses whether the experience gained is sufficient to complete the design assignment.
The second part consists of a thesis (written in the summer) and a design assignment. You will complete the design assignment in the fall, over eight working days at the Architects Register office in The Hague.
Candidates who successfully complete the first part are eligible to participate in the second part of the exam. This will conclude with an interview in which the thesis and design will be discussed.

We understand you might want to know more, for example about the schedule, time constraints, and costs. Feel free to contact the exam coordinator, Anneleen de Jong.
The registration deadline for the exam in calendar year 2026 is December 31, 2025.
